Gareth is a master woodturner. He lives with his wife, two sons,
and father at the end of Hudson Slough five miles from the Oregon coastal
community of Reedsport. He has a passion for preserving beautiful pieces
of wood and is also managing a small woodlot where he is planting Myrtlewood and
Black Walnut trees
for future generations. In his spare time he manages to turn out some
beautiful works of art.
Gareth has lived in the Reedsport area since 1978 when he moved here
from Roseburg. He has been a woodworker since he took first place in the
State Fair for a spice cabinet he made in Jr. High. He has been turning
wood since 1985.
He especially enjoys
taking a block of wood and watching his forms take shape as the shavings
ribbon over his shoulders as it turns on the lathe. His sense of design
and proportion are melded with the beautiful qualities of each piece of
wood he works with. He studies each piece of wood carefully, sometimes
spending weeks on a single piece so as to best preserve and show off the
natural qualities of that particular piece of wood.
He creates original works of art that are
aesthetically pleasing and treasured by many. The pride he takes in his
work can be seen in the attention to detail he uses in his gallery pieces.
Even wall thickness, smooth transitions, no "ridges", no
sander marks, and a shape that "works" are a few of the goals
for each piece. Even the insides of his hollow vessels are sanded smooth and finished to
perfection.
Many woodturners from the area visit Gareth
regularly to discuss woodturning design, receive technical advice, and
obtain turning stock.
Gareth’s Woodturnings are featured at The Myrtlewood Gallery in Reedsport, Oregon.
